One woman is dead and a man is clinging to life after afire swept their home in Windcrest overnight, 1200 WOAI's Michael Main reports.

Windcrest Fire Chief Dan Reeves tells 1200 WOAI news that fire and rescue crews were slowed down by burglar bars on the home, which is in the 500 block of Balfour.

"We got the burglar bars off, secured the front door, there was a gentleman right in front of the front door, the house was full of smoke," Reeves said.  "We were able to pull him out."

He says they found the woman dead inside the home.

"We do have one fatality," he said.  "She was in one of the back bedrooms and by the time we were able to get to that area, she had already passed away."

No one else was in the home at the time.  So far, no word on the cause of the fire.

County spokeswoman Laura Jesse said this morning the County Fire Marshal is looking into the possibility of a lightning strike as a cause.
