They're in the swim in the Northside ISD.
The district today opened its new Northside Swim Center, which includes three pools, including a 50 meter Olympic-sized pool which will be able to host major regional, state, national, and international competitions.
Also in the complex are a dive pool and a lessons and instruction pool. The facility is located on Loop 1604 on the northwest side, in the geographic center of the country's largest school district.
"Swimming is a great sport that you can do all your life, and this will be open to people from throughout Bexar County," County Judge Nelson Wolff told 1200 WOAI news.
The Northside Swim Center was built with money approved by voters in the 2010 Northside school bond election, and the Bexar County venue tax extension, approved by voters in 2008.
The outdoor aquatics complex, incluidng the adjacent Northside Natatorium, will seat 2400 spectators and is the only facility of it's kind in the central United States. Wolff said it will be used for several levels of competition, which will attract thousands of athletes, coaches, and their families to San Antonio.
The facility was built by Bartlett Cocke General Contractors, a local firm. Wolff said the only other facilities remotely like the Northside Swim Center are located in Florida and California.
Northside Superintendent Brian T. Woods says more than 400 Northside high school swimmers, divers, and water polo players will benefit from the increased water space crated with the opening of the Northside Swim Center.
"More than 500 children also participate in club swimming teams each year, not to mention the thousands of community members who also utilize Aquatics facilities for swim lessons and open swim times," he said.
