Hunters Help the Hungry
Food banks will offer venison to the needy this holiday season

The Texas Food Bank Network is now operating a program where a hunter's catch of extra venison lands on the table of a hungry family. Called Hunters For the Hungry, the TFBN's Celia Cole says the program is a win-win situation.

"For Texas landowners to control their deer population, for people who want to give back to the community and help their neighbors in need and it provides a badly needed source of lean protein."

She says it's the perfect time of year
for the program when hunters are
out hunting and people need food
for the holidays.

The deer meat is processed into ground
beef so it can be used just like hamburger.

"Connects hunters who want to donate with meat processors who agree to process it for a small fee and then get it out to our food banks."

"One of our food banks would have a big
venison chili which got clients used to
the meat," says Cole.
