Army Ranger Who Rescued Jessica Lynch Dies in SA

The U.S. Army Ranger who led the unit that rescued PFC Jessica Lynch in the early weeks of the Iraq War has died in San Antonio, 1200 WOAI news repots.

Army Command Sgt. Maj. Martin Barreras died at San Antonio Military Medical Center of wounds suffered earlier this month in Herat Province Afghanistan.

Barreras, 49, was the top enlisted soldier from the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the First Armored Division, based at Ft. Bliss. 

The operation to free Lynch from captivity by the Iraqis was one of the key events of the start of the Iraq War.  It was the first ever military rescue effort to rescue a female POW.
