Zero fatalities during this year's super long 18 day Fiesta celebration is the goal of police and prosecutors who are vowing a crackdown on drunk, distracted, and texting drivers, 1200 WOAI's Berit Mason reports.
"We will have our DWI patrols out, we also have the Fiesta Commission and Silver Eagle have still arranged the cab rides that they do, that's very important," District Attorney Susan Reed said.
Police and sheriff's deputies are also committed to pulling over motorists who are endangering Fiesta-goers.
"It is so important from a lot of perspectives," Reed said. "First of all safety, but second, you don't want to do anything that is going to engender road rage."
She says drivers who are texting or e-mailing behind the wheel will also be in the sights of law enforcement.
Reed says there have been no DWI related traffic fatalities during the last three Fiestas, and she wants to extend that streak to four.
