It is uncertain how long those unaccompanied Central American children will be allowed to remain in Texas, but their families are already experiencing one important part of life in America---scammers.
The FBI in San Antonio says it has uncovered two separate schemes to defraud the families of the children who love in the United States.
FBI Special Agent Michelle Lee says one fraud scheme involved callers who claim to be representing a charitable or non profit organization, which can help the kids stay in the U.S. and reunite with relatives who are already here. Lee says the scammer is charging between $300 and 'several thousand' dollars.
She says another scammer appears to be using 'caller i.d. spoofing' to appear to be from a 'prominent San Antonio business organization' to ad credence to the scam.
She says some families, many of whom have already borrowed thousands of dollars to give to cartels to smuggle their children into the U.S., have fallen for the scams.
