Dale Earnhardt Jr. and family survive plane crash

Retired NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., his wife and daughter, along with two pilots were involved in a plane crash this afternoon. Their jet ran off the runway and caught fire at the Elizabethon Municipal Airport in Tennessee.

Everyone survived the crash, although the jet was destroyed in a fire.

The injuries were described as cuts and abrasions. Earnhardt was reportedly taken to a hospital but was not seriously injured. ESPN reports Earnhardt told ESPN's Marty Smith in a text message that he and his family are OK.

Earnhardt's sister, Kelley tweeted, "I can confirm Dale, Amy & Isla along with his two pilots were involved in a crash in Bristol TN this afternoon. Everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation. We have no further information at this time. Thank you for your understanding."
