The Texas Longhorns defeated Texas Tech 70 to 35 on Saturday afternoon at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium. It was the first time in 16 years for the Longhorns to score 70 points in a game.
“I’ve been talking all week about the way we prepared and the intent in which we practiced. The cool part for me as a coach is that it showed up at the start of the game, in the first half. These guys can recognize that when you focus and you prepare, and there’s real intention in what you do throughout the week, it carries over to the game. We definitely have something to build on from that front," said head coach Steve Sarkisian. "Obviously, offensively, I think our offensive line played a really good offensive game against a disruptive defense. I thought we got the football and ran it well. I thought we were efficient in the passing game. We’re so close on some of these deep balls but we haven’t quite hit them yet but we’ll keep taking our shots. The red zone efficiency was really good. I thought offensively, we were able to stay in front of the chains. We won on first downs which enabled us to be effective and get into some really manageable third downs and even in some of the fourth and short situations. This is when we are at our best offensively."
"Defensively, especially in the first half, we had a good plan. It’s unfortunate that we got called on the offside on the blocked punt or the score would have been 21-0. Which then allowed them to cut the lead to 14-7 and then we rebounded with a nice 12-play drive. This lead to a pick-6 and a 4th-down stop. We score again after that to take the score to 35-7," said Sarkisian. "All in all, I thought we were disruptive defensively. The plan was to make them as one dimensional as we could and force them to throw it. The unfortunate thing defensively is that we lost a bit of our mental intensity and the ball got over our heads. The beauty of all this is that it is a really good win for us to start conference play but we still have work to do. I think that it’s a good sign when we can win, not be perfect, and still have things to work on. We are going to need to because we have a tough opponent next week.”
“It’s exciting. I think that it shows the ability to not get complacent. Obviously, we had a good game last week, but like I said, every week there’s things we can do better and there’s thing we can clean up," said quarterback Casey Thompson. "We had a great week of practice and preparation. The team really bought into the game plan and I think it showed today. Our mindset was to be able to start fast and attack these guys and play with tempo. Also, we dominated the run game”.
The Longhorns are next scheduled to play the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday, October 2nd. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. in Fort Worth.
