The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly reached an agreement to hire former Super Bowl and BCS national champion Pete Carroll as their next head coach, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter Friday (January 24) morning.
"Just in: Pete Carroll and the Raiders now have reached agreement on a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option, sources tell ESPN. Another veteran legendary coach has returned," Schefter wrote on his X account.
Carroll is the fifth reported NFL head coaching hire made this offseason with the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys -- who were reportedly considering promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer -- as the only remaining coaching vacancies.
Carroll spent 14 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks before departing last January, which included winning Super Bowl XLVIII and two NFC championships and has a 181-131-1 record as an NFL head coach, which includes one season with the New York Jets (1994) and three with the New England Patriots (1997-99). The San Francisco native had previously worked as the head coach at USC, winning the 2004 Associated Press national championship, four Rose Bowl titles and seven Pac-10 championships during his tenure while going 97-19.
Carroll is one of three coaches to have won both a Super Bowl and national championship, along with Pro Football Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson and his Dallas Cowboys predecessor Barry Switzer. Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Brown also won a national title at Ohio State and seven NFL championships with the Cleveland Browns prior to the Super Bowl expansion era.
