MATCH RECAP: San Antonio FC Opens Season With 1-0 Win Over '19 Champs

The Marcina era got underway for San Antonio FC (1-0-0, 3 points) on Saturday night at Toyota Field in front of 7,020 happy fans as SAFC earned all three points in a hard fought 1-0 win over 2019 USL Championship Winners Real Monarchs (0-0-1, 0 points). With only 7 returning players from last season for SAFC , there are several new faces for fans to get acquainted with. One of them will be Defender Callum Montgomery who made quite the first impression, netting the match winner in the 67' off an assist from fellow newcomer and new SAFC Captain Luis Solignac.

First year Manager Alen Marcina, who replaced Darren Powell in the offseason, had to basically rebuild the team. Only two returnees saw the field for SAFC on Saturday night. And while there were no goals from his new look offense, the new skipper was pleased with the result. “Obviously, it’s a great opponent. They’re the reigning champions and we knew it was going to be a difficult challenge. We saw it as a great opportunity to start the season going against them. We wanted to put on a good show for the fans and hopefully they left excited after tonight."

USL Championship - Real Monarchs FC vs San Antonio FC

San Antonio FC has still never lost a home opener (3-2-0) through their first five seasons.

Another player who has opened many eyes in 2020 has been Midfielder and SAFC Pro Academy product Jose Gallegos. After an impressive pre-season, Gallegos picked up right where he left off and delivered a performance that had him at times looking like the most dominant player on the pitch. Said Gallegos after the match, “I thought it was a great performance from everyone against a very tough opponent. It’s all about game management in the end and we executed that very well.”

Next up for San Antonio FC is a road match at Colorado next weekend in a battle of early unbeatens. Colorado were 2-1 winners over OKC Energy on Saturday night.
