MATCH RECAP: San Antonio FC Lose 2-1 to Texas Rivals RGV-FC

San Antonio FC (1-1-1, 4 points) lost for the first time this season as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Texas rivals RGV-FC (3-0-0, 9 points) on a windy Sunday night at HEB Park in the Valley. RGV-FC continues to show that they are a different team than the one that only managed two wins in all of 2020. RGV-FC Midfielder Wan Kuzain scored in the first half and Midfielder Christian Sorto added the match winner in the second half for the Toros. With the win RGV-FC are perfect on the young USL season and they have also drawn first blood in the Copa Tejas standings as they took all 3 points in the match. RGV-FC are off to their best start ever with three straight wins to begin the season.

Forward Santiago Patiño scored the goal for San Antonio, his fourth of the season which leads the team. With the defeat San Antonio find themselves 5 points behind RGV-FC in the Mountain Division after three games. It was the first loss for SAFC against RGV-FC since May 2019, a span of 6 games.

RGV-FC Midfielder Wan Kuzain scored the opening goal of the match in the 43' when the former Young Player of the Year Finalist (2018) split two San Antonio Defenders and then beat SAFC Goal Keeper Matt Cardone from the near side with his perfectly angled shot to the far post. The goal put a damper on what otherwise had been a good half for Cardone and the SAFC Defense with a couple of highlight reel saves throughout the half, but RGV finally earned the breakthrough minutes before the half ended.

RGV-FC dominated the opening half with 73% possession and they out shot SAFC 9-4, with five shots on target to SAFC's one. The half also proved to be a testy one for the two Texas rivals as SAFC racked up 3 yellow cards in the opening 45 minutes after some chippy play between the teams.

In the second half, SAFC's biggest young talent, Midfielder Jose Gallegos, made his first appearance of the 2021 season. Gallegos trained with two of Europe's biggest football clubs this past March in Bayern Munich and Barcelona, ahead of a potential summertime transfer. Another San Antonio FC Academy product, 17 year old Forward Fabrizio Bernal, also came on for SAFC in the second half.

But it was RGV-FC who would continue to steal the show on the field. Midfielder Christian Sorto would double the lead for the Toros in the 57' when he hit a shot on the ground from the corner of the SAFC box, beating Cardone from distance for the 2-0 lead.

Patiño would get his goal in the 68' when he would pounce on the rebound of a San Antonio shot that hit the RGV post to keep the game interesting, but SAFC could not find an equalizer.

San Antonio FC return home next weekend to host Eastern Conference foe Birmingham Legion FC on Saturday night at Toyota Field. It will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Like SAFC, Birmingham are also 1-1-1 through their first three games, earning 4 points. SAFC hasn't played an Eastern Conference team since 2017.
