Sincere McCormick rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns but Baylor piled up 546 yards of offense in a 63-14 win over UTSA on Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium.
Quarterback Charlie Brewer led the Bears (2-0) by completing 12 of 16 passes for 163 yards and three TDs. His favorite target was Denzel Mims, who caught seven for 101 yards and three scores, all in the first half.
Meanwhile, backup quarterback Gerry Bohanon paced the Baylor rushing attack with 93 yards on seven carries and Trestan Ebner added 76 yards on four totes.
McCormick led the Roadrunners (1-1) ground game, which totaled 164 yards on the day. The true freshman from Converse Judson High School scored for the first time in his young career on a 2-yard plunge late in the third quarter. He then broke loose up the middle for a 54-yard dash early in the final stanza, the longest play from scrimmage by a Roadrunner since a 73-yard rush by Tyrell Clay against Rice on Oct. 21, 2017.
UTSA senior safety Carl Austin III registered a team-high six tackles, while SaVion Harris, LaDarian McFarland and Jahmal Sam all posted five stops apiece.
Baylor struck first when Brewer hit Mims on a 9-yard TD pass in the left corner of the end zone midway through the opening quarter. The first score of the afternoon was set up by a 55-yard run from Ebner.
The Bears went up by two touchdowns after Brewer capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive with a 5-yard quarterback keeper with 43 seconds left in the first.
Mims hauled in his second touchdown pass of the half on a 30-yard strike from Brewer down the left sideline with 9:27 remaining in the second quarter. John Mayers’ extra point gave the home team a 21-0 edge.
After a three-and-out by UTSA, Grayland Arnold returned a punt 73 yards to paydirt to help push the lead to 28-0, marking the first punt return for a touchdown allowed in program history (96 games).\
Late in the opening half, Brewer found Mims again for a scoring connection, this time on a 26-yard pass over the middle that helped provide a 35-0 halftime advantage.
The Bears opened the second half with another scoring drive. Bohanon scooted 38 yards down the right sideline on a third-down play and reached the end zone four plays later on a keeper around the right end.
Baylor took a 49-0 lead following JaMycal Hasty’s 1-yard scoring plunge with 6:11 left in the third quarter before McCormick touched the end zone twice for the Roadrunners.
The Bears answered McCormick’s two scores with a pair of their own on a 15-yard TD run on a reverse by Chris Platt with eight and a half minutes on the clock and a 61-yard dash by Qualan Jones three minutes later.
The Roadrunners will return home to host Army (1-1) next Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.
